Need to know info about Blown Glass supplies:
We are not glass blowers, but we have worked with blown glass supplies & done enough research to be able to provide you with enough information for you to be able to decide if blown glass supplies is something that you would like to work with.
When we acquire the blown glass ends from our vendors, we are getting the scrapes of glass that have not been annealed.
What does this mean for you, the customer? Most blown glass that is sold is an annealed piece of glass. For example, glasses that you drink out of. The pieces that you are purchasing have not been annealed.
What is annealed? Annealing is the gradual cooling of the glass down to room temperature. Most annealing furnaces run on a computer program and the length of time for most pieces is about 16 hours. Larger pieces take a longer period of time in the annealer.
What happens if you don’t anneal glass? Glass that has not been properly annealed retains thermal stresses caused by quenching, which will indefinitely decrease the strength and reliability of the product. Inadequately annealed glass is likely to crack or shatter when subjected to relatively small temperature changes or to mechanical shock or stress.
What is the difference between annealing and tempering of glass? While annealed glass is cheaper and serves as a reliable solution for interior designs, it's not as strong as tempered glass, and can splinter into jagged pieces if broken. Tempered glass, on the other hand, is more durable but also more costly.
